CHARLIE’S STORY
Charles Everett Woods
A Marine. A future firefighter. A son, brother, friend, and source of hope to everyone who knew him.
October 31, 2003 – October 28, 2025
“Everywhere Charlie went, he carried a bright light of compassion, empathy, confidence, humor, integrity, selflessness, and above all, hope.”
— Dawn Kameo, Charlie’s Mom
Meet Charlie

A Dream That Started Early
Long before he became a United States Marine, Charlie had another dream.
From the time he was six years old, Charles Everett Woods wanted to become a firefighter. His interest in the fire service became such an important part of his life that it helped inspire his mother, Dawn Kameo, to become a firefighter herself. As Charlie grew older, that childhood dream never disappeared. During high school, he had the opportunity to join a Firefighter Explorer program with a neighboring department, giving him his first real experience in the profession he had admired for so many years. For Charlie, serving others wasn't simply an idea for the future. It was becoming part of who he was.
A New Way to Serve
After graduating from high school, Charlie chose another path of service and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He was stationed at Camp Pendleton, California, where he served with 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines, Golf Company. Becoming a Marine added another chapter to Charlie's life, but it didn't change the person underneath the uniform. He remained confident, compassionate, funny, and fiercely himself. Those who knew Charlie remember someone with an ability to make people laugh, connect with others, and leave an impression wherever he went.
More Than the Uniform
There was another side of Charlie that thousands of people came to know online. Under the name Unhinged_r1, Charlie shared pieces of his personality and life on Instagram and TikTok. His sense of humor, confidence, motorcycles, and unmistakable personality helped him build a community that extended far beyond the people he knew personally.
But behind the Marine uniform, social media account, and motorcycle was a young man deeply loved by his family and friends. Dawn describes her son as someone who carried compassion, empathy, confidence, a wicked sense of humor, integrity, and selflessness everywhere he went. And above all else, Charlie carried HOPE.
October 28, 2025
On the morning of October 28, 2025, Charlie was riding his motorcycle to work and formation at Camp Pendleton when he was involved in a collision on the freeway in Irvine, California. Charlie died that day. He was just three days away from his 22nd birthday. In a matter of moments, a son, Marine, brother, friend, and young man with an entire future ahead of him was gone. For his mother, no experience from military service, the fire service, EMS, or the many difficult moments she had encountered throughout her life could prepare her for the loss of her youngest son. But Charlie's story would not end on October 28.
Turning Grief Into Hope
In the aftermath of Charlie's death, Dawn was faced with a loss that could never be replaced. She also found herself thinking about the person Charlie had been and the life he had wanted to live.
Charlie had dreamed of becoming a firefighter. He believed in service. He cared deeply for others. He brought laughter into people's lives. And throughout his short life, he left behind something his family refused to allow his death to extinguish: HOPE. From that idea, Charlie’s Hope was born. Dawn created the organization not only to remember her son, but to continue something that had been part of Charlie since childhood—his desire to serve others.
His Dream Lives On
Today, Charlie’s Hope carries his legacy into the Fire, Rescue, and EMS communities that meant so much to Charlie and his family. The organization helps provide life-saving training tools and medical education to Fire, Rescue, and EMS organizations when traditional funding sources have been exhausted. Charlie never had the opportunity to fulfill his childhood dream of becoming a firefighter. But through Charlie’s Hope, his dream can help another firefighter train for the call that saves a life. It can help an EMT continue their education. It can put better training equipment into the hands of a department that otherwise couldn't afford it. And through every person helped, every skill learned, and every life ultimately touched, a piece of Charlie continues forward.

His life was short. His impact doesn't have to be.
Charlie’s dream of serving others lives on through every firefighter, EMT, and paramedic given an opportunity through Charlie’s Hope.
BE THE CHANGE YOU WANT TO SEE IN THIS WORLD.
